The history of women and videogames

I still remember being startled in the early 1990s when I left my younger girlfriend alone in the living room for a while, then came back to discover that she'd fired up the Nintendo and was playing Super Mario. That was the very first time in the 12 years that I'd been playing computer games that I'd ever seen a girl voluntarily play a video game by herself.

Of course, as it is rightly said, women now play the biggest video game of all. It's called "Facebook".

As crotchety as this makes me sound, back in my day, girls who played video games didn't take sexy pics with unplugged controllers. We told our friends we couldn't go to that party because we had to study, but really we wanted to finish Chrono Trigger...

Never understood the anti GGs. If you don't like the games being made, either don't freaking play them or make your own. Why crap on everyone else?

Pure gold - and so very true.

You could even tephrase that to say "women now play the biggest and most addictive video game of all..."

I will face a few women with them playing “computer games” all the time (facebook), and then I am curious about their reaction.

A long while back, I want to say maybe 12 or 13 years, I was a member of a gaming clan that primarily played First Person Shooters. Quake 3, RTCW, EF, a few others... Anyway, eventually a woman tried out for the clan. And, to be fair to her, she was pretty good. She was easily the best female FPS player I had ever seen. Still basically average for our clan, but better than any other female.

So we took her in, and for a time, all was well. We'd rotate some of our average players in and out of matches with other clans, and she got a good amount of play time. But, eventually, she started causing trouble. Two things happened.

The first was that she was used to being the "hot gamer chick" and getting attention and perks from everyone else. Our clan was focused on winning matches. She wanted to play in EVERY game, but as a merely average player in our clan, that wasn't going to happen. We had three key players we relied on constantly (myself as the number 2), and since we usually played 5v5 or 6v6, this left 2 or 3 slots for other players. We chose from the pool of whomever was around online, and some of our average players were really good on certain maps, or were known to work well with others. So it was a dynamic process that didn't always favor her exclusively.

Long story short, she was benched about half the time and had to spectate, and it drove her batty. She caused a lot of drama over this.

Then, inevitably, she dated members of the clan. Since most of our clan was based in a similar geographic area, this became a real possibility. She went through three of us (I'm sad to say that in my youthful ignorance, I was one of them, again, #2). Physically she was pretty average, but again, for a gamer chick this was considered extraordinary.

Anyway, after going through three of us, she finally settled on one (not coincidentally our number 1 player), and then convinced him to break up the clan, because we supposedly all hated her because we didn't demand that she get more play time. Or something. So that was the end of our clan. In EF we were arguably the #1 clan. Sometimes #2. So it was a pretty big loss.

All this for a player who was "pretty good."

So even the few gamer girls that do exist, and have a modicum of talent, are just not worth the effort to keep around. They are drama whores and, as your previous article suggested, can't accept the fact that others are better, or might deserve more, or can even criticize them.

Fortunately for the guy that ended up with her, he dumped her after a couple of years. It was the end of the clan, but I at least got my friend back eventually.

I mostly don't take issue with this, however, I was playing everquest 99-01, and slutty gamer girls were already showing up flirting with everybody in elite guilds and breaking them up as a result.

One such girl was in my computer science program who broke up the 3rd biggest guild on the server I was playing on at the time. She was a solid 7 on looks, 8 if your preferences tend toward Jews. She was also a complete basket case.

@ Dystopic:

Recognized RTCW, but drawing a blank for EF. What's the full name?

Star Trek: Elite Force. Pretty much the only good Star Trek shooter to ever exist. Like RTCW it was also based on the Q3 engine.

Tbh it is true SOME (I know I know) girls do love games genuinely just as much. My girlfriend (28, same age as me) is currently in the other room gaming right now. We play together often too.

However she's a conservative Indian girl, stayed a virgin till she met me at 26, and rather than going out on the piss with girlfriends, preferred to stay in and play games. (Likely influenced by her brother who also plays).

She doesn't announce to the entire world "HAI BOYZ, HOT GURRLLL HERE", and just gets on and plays whatever she wants to play, be it single or multiplayer.

That's the difference I think, the attentionwhores mentioned here go on the game purely to announce their presence, and like a cat, plonk in the way of whatever blokes are doing at the time, to demand the attention be turned to them. The majority of girls of course would rather be doing their nails, taking pics on nights out to show off how social they are, and whatever else, but now they're walking about with "GEEK" emblazoned across their clothes, pretending they spend all day sat playing Call of Duty (rather than pissing around with their phones) and so on, purely because a lot of blokes are doing that now.

I really miss staying up until 4am for RTCW and SoF2 matches a dozen or so years ago. We only had two chicks who played. One was a tomboy who was shacking up with the guy who hosted our clan server. She'd play at the start of the night, get frustrated after getting her ass handed to her, and usually quit early. The other was an Asian woman whose husband played too, but she had time to hone her skills on maternity leave while the rest of us were at work all day. Her long-distance twitch shooting skills were devastating...some guys shot just as well, but none shot so considently

Bob said...

Yup, the difference is the girls who are into it will just play and not make a big deal out of it, and not announce they're a girl whatsoever.

Then you have the twitch sluts, sat showing their arse and tits off for cash and attention, with the game in the background doing nothing: http://i.imgur.com/4KTYEFm.png

They're just moving with the times, simply the new scanty cheerleaders. Doing whatever they have to, to get cash and attention from men. Gotta hand it to some of them, it's very effective, also the gamer crowd is VERY susceptible to such things.

Both of my previous WoW guilds got annihilated by two women causing drama between eachother, and prompting whiteknights to group up on either "side", making them clash, they revelled in it.

Women always have the tendency to break apart the mannerbund of men. And gaming is the latest iteration of that.

Females aren't pioneers, generally. They don't want to get into something new until it's popular.

For another example of this, just watch Leadership from a Dancing Guy and observe how long it takes for females to start joining, versus men.

Michael Maier said...

Meh... if the first dancing dude had bigger balls he could have just grabbed a girl at the start. Maintain frame and she'll forget how silly she feels soon enough.

Michael Maier said...

Had our work Christmas party yesterday and the dancing was just painful to watch. A bunch of monkeys on crack would have done just as well. I'm all for being less than serious at times but ... ugh.
