Condemning a generation of nerds

To the Friend Zone:
Finn Has Feelings, and visibly so. But instead of overcompensating for that supposed “weakness,” getting defensive, or shutting off from other people like a Broody Male Hero might, he quickly and easily bonds with Poe, and later with Rey. Recognizing Rey’s abilities and strengths, he accepts her completely as an equal and peer*, and instead of feeling threatened and attempting to control her or one-up himself against her, he genuinely compliments her skill. They gush at each other, actually–it’s suuuper cute and mutually affirming.

Finn doesn’t balk at helping out, whether it’s passing tools to Rey in the Falcon or aiding Chewie with his injuries. Finn doesn’t talk over Rey or try to make choices for her. They may disagree and banter, but it’s not barbed, and it’s at an even keel. He looks out for himself, but not at the expense of others – when Finn decides to leave for the Outer Rim, he honestly tells Rey his story and how he feels about her, and asks her to come, and then accepts her refusal gracefully. He respects her decisions, her autonomy, and Rey as a person.

Obviously Finn digs this girl — who wouldn’t, she is undeniably The Coolest — and he does ask if she has a boyfriend early on, but after she says “None of your business,” he lets it go. When he could sulk or tease or be possessive or rude toward her, he doesn’t. He adores her, but is happy just to see Rey safe and well. He’s not preoccupied with romance or feeling “jilted,” where another character might resent her for it. When she hugs him on the Starkiller Base, he doesn’t turn lecherous or try to make a move. She owes him nothing, even when he risked his life to come to her aid, and he gets that! He’s not a White Knight, Friend-Zoned, or a Nice Guy. He never tries to “take” anything he wants when it comes to Rey. He doesn’t view her as a thing to take.

If Finn has a defining attribute, it’s caring about other people, as people. Kicking ass is not the priority. Winning is not the priority.
Clearly winning is not the priority. And that is why Gammas and male feminists always lose. When you'd rather have female approval of your actions than actually accomplish your goals, failure is guaranteed.

As is a cold and unaccompanied bed.

Never forget that girls think puppies and babies are super cute and that jerks and Nazis are hateful.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised. Given that they we're really pushing the multicult angle, I would have thought there'd be more "If he'd been *white*, they would have been together halfway through the film!"

Can we assume then that the feminist card of strong, independent woman still trumps black man/white girl - at least in Hollywood?

Fin is a pretty good character. Not Alpha, obviously, but he has the greatest conflict in the film, having to choose between loyalty to the only family he's ever known and doing what he feels to be right.

It's a shame he gets pushed aside in favor of the boring Katniss.

Has this been written by a third grader?

That website could very well be one of the most insufferable websites in existence. Especially since it's all about "geek girl culture." Although, I like how it's called The Mary Sue and they talk about Rey. It's a shame that a past time that I like is attacked so much by these feminist/gamma types. Thanks for fighting the good fight Vox.

Oh the fuckity-fuck he wasn't friend-zoned. Finn was absolutely friend-zoned. He got the Friend-Hug and everything.

Rey is simply put a badly written character. I yelled about this elsewhere.

THE BAD

Rey. Daisy Ridley again fine job. Nuff said. Rey is the Princess-who-Rescues-Herself. Doesn't need a man in her life and never will. Rey is pure feminist wish fulfillment. No explanation at all is given for her hyper-competence in everything. And the bad part is they production team clearly felt none was needed. It is purest Grrrrrrl Power. She is already being hailed as a Feminist Icon because she isn't real. Standard Korra-Pixie-Ninja. She gets really mad at Finn for holding her hand and trying to save her when they are being shot at. She can do that herself thank you very much.

This is going to create problems with plotting down the road. Unless they are going to ramrod the Rey-Finn love story in the name of an SJW-friendly romance. She already has Wonder Woman's problem. She is too powerful for any man in her life to be attractive to her. None of them are strong enough to be able to push her buttons in her in the real world.

Sole exception...her mortal enemy Kylo Ren. This could make things very interesting indeed but there is no way in hell they are going to do that.

Nope it's either going to be a forced romance with Finn, celibacy as a Jedi Knight or they will go with something really SJW friendly and make her a lesbian. (*Yeah everybody laughed when I said the same thing about Xena.*)

No, the black man / white girl romance is coming. 100% guaranteed. They're just saving that revolting development for a sequel.

Also, let's not forget that in Hollywood, unlike real life, the pathetic needy stalking white-knighting "nice guy" beta friend can get the girl.

They're saving Finn for a cantina scene in Episode 8 where Milo (no costume required) makes a pass at him.

I'm really hoping in the next episode that Finn hooks up with the top gun X-Wing pilot in the first ever Star Wars gay relationship. I can't wait to hear see the Fanboys squirm and try and justify that one.

he is absolutely in the friendzone & i'm not the 1st to write about it, I linked to someone else on my blog who examined finn the bumbling eunuch. and rey is a mary sue which is appropriate for that horrible website with the same name.

The movie is a fascinating study in female solipsism but I cant enjoy anything that gets sociosexuality so wrong. All the men exist to make Rey look better. Han lost his attitude. Poe is a bad charachature of a snarky alpha. Finn could have been a great character if his emotional conflict wasn't totally ignored. Kylo Ren is clearly and obviously gamma, which is funny but makes him totally unthreatening as a villain.

Bahahaha you don't say

And how do people like that fare when they face people for whom winning IS a priority?

We could ask Jeb! lol

Then this guy who just does whatever she says will end up sitting around bitching about how girls don't like nice guys while she dates the guy who actually pursued what he wanted instead of worrying about if he'll look like a 'jerk'.

The new STAR WARS film was one of the worst movies that I have ever had the displeasure of having to see. I thought it would be bad; I didn't expect it to be so bad that I would actually regard the prospect of having to watch Jar Jar bloody Binks again favourably by comparison.

The film is damn-near unwatchable precisely because, as sigsawyer says, it gets sociosexuality so hopelessly wrong. Worse than that, though, Rey is easily the biggest Mary Sue ever seen on film.

Which, of course, explains exactly why the numbskulls over at themarysue.com love her so much. And why anyone with actual testicles cannot stand her.

Unless he goes apeshit and attacks the school in the blaster-free zone on the Death Star or something.

This article made me appreciate how alpha Han Solo was.

Didnt watch the film, truly couldnt care less and I used to be the biggest star wars geek around.

On the other hand episode 7 of The Expanse is coming out this week, and its probavly the greatest on screen sci fi I have ever seen. Puts Blade Runner to shame. Yes, that good.

Timmy3 said...

Finn is a non-threatening friend. You can't have that many alphas in a movie. Han Solo is the old alpha so that makes him non-threatening too. Rey may be the hero, but her interest in saving herself lacks any sort of determination. She doesn't appear to care. She wants to return to the planet that left her for dead. It seems like she would have died if she didn't have a brain. The story has an accidental quality to it, a bit like Harry Potter. Fate allows her to escape unscathed.

MichaelJMaier said...

It's far worse than Episode III. Ray is the embodiment of Force Feminism. Hear HER roar! You'd think Joss Whedon wrote this abortion of a film.

And Disney will not overlook making her and Finn hook up later. Disney owns Marvel and at every turn, they push the MudSharks. (I'm actually still stunned Simmons and Tripp weren't banging inside of two episodes of SHIELD. And I LIKED Tripp.)

The worst of all? They emasculated HAN FUCKING SOLO. Gelded the best character in the series before snuffing him. I wonder if Harrison Ford even demanded more money before raping his own iconic character.

Good point... I thought Potter was blamed on having a female writer. But JJ seems to be a total pussy so I guess it's both fags AND women that write like that.

This reminds me of my favorite romance novel, A Book That Was Never Written. It never sold any copies, but it was suuuuper cute and empowering.

Yo Ron, thanks for recommending the Expanse, just got finished watching the first ep and it's awesome.

When the hell did Syfy stop sucking?

They need to learn a trade like pin-striping trucks. That doesn't mean they will get the chicks even though they are pick-up artists.

Newest example; Captain America's Sad Girlfriend (AKA Agent Carter) now has an African-American Scientist Boyfriend.

We are ordered to believe that this was possible in 1947.

Although to be fair they don't let anyone smoke on that show either so it is clearly meant to be a fantasy.

Harrison doesn't even need any lube to allow Hollywood to assfuck his characters. didn't you see the last Indiana Jones movie?

You would think a website named The Mary Sue would be more aware of how terrible a character Mary Rey was. But then Scalzi thought it was a good idea to call himself a rapist and Delaney said he's a fan of NAMBLA, so it's a pattern with these people to proudly claim to be things the rest of the world despises.

Scanned the comments it was funny to see the SJW explode over whether or not Finn was a good character in defying stereotypes or just another black guy being a white wo/man's bitch.

Finn seemed like he could have been played by anyone, white or black; his character was very nonthreatening and likable, much in the way Luke was in the Star Wars. Poe Dameron was a shade of Han Solo's swagger.

Rey, however, was undoubtedly the weakest link. I don't understand the praise she's getting, especially from the Bechdel test types. She was wooden, a blank page. There was no sense of personality beyond a robotic bitchiness.

Hey, maybe that's the twist. She's a droid that Luke built. Making Finn's friendzoning even more pitiful.

I hope you don't mind that I used "wellwalla" it was the only patois I could remember from the show. I'd rather call you beltalowda

Look, it's a simple problem with a simple solution. You don't like what these faggots put out? Then put out something you do like. If you like it, someone else will probably like it too. Will you have the same budget or the same distribution channel? No, but so what? If story is actually important than there is going to be someone out there that would drop 5$ on a good story.

Well, at least they put in a "good word for ol' Darth Vader (respect to respected...):
"But where Darth Vader was authoritarian and fear-inspiring, Kylo is amateurish, angsty, and conflicted."

And then she goes on to say this:

"The Force Awakens shows us the downsides of the Dark Side. Instead of embodying the patriarchy’s lie of what masculinity “should” be (aggressive, powerful, solitary), Kylo Ren demonstrates the reality (assholery). The dark side of the force is a spot-on metaphor for toxic masculinity. This is why the Emo Kylo Ren Twitter account (“ren’s rights activist,” sound familiar?) works so well – it parodies not only Kylo but draws parallels between his immature behavior and conventional ideals of masculinity.

And Kylo, fittingly, is miserable. Constantly comparing himself to an outdated, impossible standard of manliness, Kylo is a clear example of how the patriarchy’s emphasis on traditional gender norms hurts both men and women. Kylo hates himself for not being Dark and Man enough: for feeling love for his parents, for having feelings, for being human. His only satisfaction being in the power he can wield over others. According to dark side/toxic masculinity code, the only feeling it’s okay for him to have is anger — and his own proves to be petulant, destructive, and ultimately ineffective. He tears other people apart in order to preserve his sense of manhood – er, darkness.

Ultimately, the dark side, like toxic masculinity, well… to quote Admiral Ackbar, it’s a trap. It hurts people: yourself first and foremost. The authoritarian “First Order” then is aptly named – patriarchy may have come first, but it’s passé. How fitting is it that the Resistance’s General is none other than Huttslayer and feminist icon Leia Organa? And that Kylo Ren’s chief rival will be the franchise’s newest and brightest female protagonist, Rey, her power all light and feminism? I can’t wait for Rey, Finn,, & co. to overthrow the patriarchy dark side and bring balance to the Force. And I’m excited for this and coming generations to have Finn and Poe as examples of what heroes can be."

lol Couldn't even really read this stuff but I get their "twisted understanding".

These people need prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thanks for writing this Mr. Vox Day.
