WRE: Mormon edition

Having broken through to destroy the Anglican Church, women now have the Mormons in their equalitarian crosshairs:
To highlight what they deem as gender inequality within the faith, women are expected to join a standby line for tickets to an all-male meeting of church priesthood holders, said Kate Kelly, the group's founder.

Church officials declined their previous request for tickets but announced recently that the session will be broadcast live for the first time. Church officials say the move aims to make the meeting accessible to all members around the globe.
The session is reserved for members of the priesthood, which includes most males in the church who are 12 and older. Session broadcasts were previously password-protected. Kelly called the move an important step forward but said women want to attend the meeting.

"We're hoping to demonstrate with our actions and our bodies that we are ready not only for the blessings, but the responsibility of the priesthood," said Kelly, an international human rights lawyer in Washington, D.C., and the founder of Ordain Women....

The movement began growing in the mid-2000s with the creation of the blog, "Feminist Mormon Housewives," said Matthew Bowman, assistant professor of religion at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and author of a book about Mormons.

That set off the creation of other blogs and websites, and more recently, Facebook groups. Ordain Women launched earlier this year and has a website with about 150 profiles of people who support its cause and a Facebook page with 1,000 followers.

"What you've seen is a digital creation of a community that has really become galvanized," Bowman said.

Kelly said she and others have heard from church leaders that motherhood is the equivalent if priesthood. Her group disagrees.

"Fatherhood is the appropriate parallel to motherhood," Kelly said. "Priesthood is separate and apart from gender."

Kelly said she is hopeful church leaders will be persuaded by the faith, persistence and respectful tone of the women and let them into the meeting.
One would think that the Mormons would have the brains to look at what has happened to every church that has permitted women to enter the priesthood before submitting to feminist demands and the long slow decline into irrelevance, but the initial indications are that the Mormons will soon go the way of the mainline Christian congregations.

They should talk to the Boy Scouts about what happens when you try to compromise with people whose real motivation is that they hate what you stand for.

The Mormons will be duped just as every other male dominated genre, belief system, with the lovely successes of feminism. Do the 1000 FB followers know that F'ism is just as Anti Christ as it is to be Anti the Father of Mormon?

Let us explore the mind controlled art forms of late; current PR pics of one Miley and Britney Spears Work Bitch and GaGa's Applause.

Women are like cats, these cats operate on their lower, lesser selves requiring; petting, awards, praise or worship.

Gone from them is the worship of God.

They need to see if they can bring polygamy back. It would solve the problem of a shortage of alpha.

They might televise it but I hope and pray they don't let themselves be feminized. They should excommunicate the heretics.

A Christian church needs both discipline and charity, or put differently, justice and mercy. The formula is I sin, I repent, God forgives. The second step has been removed, and the first has been attacked by defining sin so narrowly that it only covers something like killing and raping a child.

I don't know all that much about Mormonism, but istm there might be a difference in kind between how women became priests on the episcopal church and what they might do in the Mormon church.

With the episcopals, women priests coincided with general laxity about any objective standards. That might not have to be the case with the Mormons. While the Bible is quite that women can't be priests or pastors, the Mormons may have other ways to change their standards without abandoning standards all together.

None of this is to imply that they ought to do it. Capitulating to the harpies is a bad idea. I'm just saying there might be a different dynamic at play because of the nature of authority in Mormonism.

I didn't know that polygamy was making a come back among the Mormons.

It'll be good and bad. A weird little cult will collapse but Utah will become less family friendly in other ways.

I guess those women aren't having enough kids if they have enough time to pursue this. The leaders would be better off telling them to have more kids.

One thing that really stood out is how they phrased it "polite, respectful" this is really how it is. Before a man gives in to sin, the evil inclination is polite, respectful. All a man has to do is polite shake his head no and the matter is settled. But oh my brothers! If a man gives in then evil will stop being polite and in the end set itself up as our master! Hasn't it always been this way?

They themselves grasp at godhood, and then are surprised that their women desire the same.

ProdigalSon said...

So, let's see...
One of the last truly patriarchal organizations, which incidentally has a tendency to produce moral, upstanding citizens, is under attack. Why am I not surprised?

I hope they don't give in. The LDS church is, in a sense, the "city on the hill" for the those who oppose feminism, because they are undeniably a male-dominated organization, and are successful, moral, (somewhat) altruistic, and bring forth youth who live for God, family, honor, and respect. If they fall, we have nothing to point to as a case study in how what we believe works, and the benefits thereof.

And no, I am not Mormon.

Amazing how women will fight supposed sexism in voluntary institutions that can simply chose not to participate in, but never seem to mind state enforced sexism universally applied to their advantage.

One of the nice things about liberty is that you don't have to treat everyone the same, but with that comes the fact that others don't have to treat you the same either. It's juvenile for anyone to want the freedom to treat others as they chose while wanting others forced to treat them as they want. But then again, given women options and men obligations is the foundation of feminist dogma.

Mormons are only superficially hardcore. They caved on caffeine, blacks, and polygamy. They really want acceptance and to be considered mainstream. While Catholics were being fed to lions, Mormons were kissing East Coast Proddy Ass to become a US State. How easily bought off this group of pseudo-orthodox newcomers are. They'll fade to irrelevance before long.

Ephrem Antony Gray said...

Meh, they're cultists in my book. But nevertheless, the most good-hearted and upstanding cultists I've met, for sure.

Even we Orthodox are under fire here, with some Greek women trying to agitate for letting women into the Altar. The answer is and has always been no and the likelihood of any change sticking is low - there was a council back in the day where all of the Orthodox basically went and accepted the filioque except for St. Mark of Ephesus. Needless to say, that 'change' was 'undone' in a generation once political pressure from the RC countries was lessened.

I don't have a dog in this fight.

Feminists are quickly running out of male spaces and organizations to colonize and feminize. I suppose when they get done with taking over every established masculine institution and organization, they'll work to ban "men only" fishing trips, guys nights out with their friends and the like. "What do you mean we can't tag along with you? PATRIARCHY! OPPRESSION!!!"

Retrenched said...

So many of these WRE issues could be avoided if only men would learn to tell women "NO" and not just cave to every one of their demands.

Not sure if we'll live long enough to see that happen though. Pendulums don't stop in the middle -- they have to swing all the way in one direction before they swing back to the other side.

This is not the first time this issue: women being ordained to the priesthood, has been brought up by "Mormon feminists". I am old enough to remember the 1970s and 80s. This issue was raised by the "Mormon feminists" of that day. The fight has been fought, been there done that, and have the t-shirt. Obviously this generation of "Mormon feminists" never heard of Sonja Johnson (I think that was her name). Sonja fought the fight all the way to the Phil Donahue show. It didn't go anywhere then and it's not going anywhere now.

I wonder how long it will be before we have prostitute priestesses much like the ancient temple priestesses.

I asked my dad if he thought the WELS (our synod) would ever admit women to the priesthood. He thought not. I'm inclined to agree. If we do, I will quit, much like my grandparents did LCMS when they did in the 1960s.

Also, my grandma (the aforementioned) is having heart surgery Oct. 17, so any prayers are surely welcome.

On the bright side, once they're done with the Mormon church, maybe they'll go after Islam. Wouldn't that be fun to watch!

Unknown said...

Eric Wilson, LC-MS did not admit women to the priesthood in the 1960's and doesn't do it today. You have your Lutheran churches mixed up.

Anonymous said...

Prayers for your grandma Eric - and as Paul stated, the LCMS has never ordained women - you may be thinking of the ELCA, or one of its predecessors - the ALC, who ordained women in 1970.

As hinted above, the LDS Church just had its semiannual General Conference this weekend, and I counted no fewer than 6 talks directly relevant to these agitating harpies and their too-numerous gamma white knights. Topics included: sexual dimorphism is divinely instituted, as is marriage; motherhood is indeed the greatest calling available to women; while priesthood authority is only granted to men to administer the Church and her ordinances, the blessings of such are available to all.

I'm curious to see how Salt Lake City will deal with these freaks besides brushing them off and continuing to teach the truth. Anecdotally, I can report that while there are too many emasculated, self-described "feminist" American Mormon men (mostly in coastal urban areas), Game is certainly being applied by many others to pursue or strengthen marriages. I was asked to speak in my ward on Father's Day, and I gave an unapologetically patriarchal description of the unique responsibilities of fathers. I had nothing but positive feedback.

Allie said...

Ben P. is right--there were a ton of talks from the leadership of the church this weekend about gender roles, and I thought it was pretty clear that the church's position is that gender roles aren't going anywhere. There was a lot about how women need to prioritize family, which I appreciated. A lot. Of people have remarked that this Conference should be taken as a loud answer to the prayers of the Ordain Women movement... They wanted the prophet and apostles to pray for revelation about ordaining women, and as it turned out, the answer was no.

Another commenter mentioned feminist Sonia Johnson, a "Mormon feminist" in earlier decades. That lady was excommunicated over her efforts (something I agree with). One of my fellow LDS friends worried about naming her daughter Sonia because she liked the name but didn't want her kid associated with memories of that incident. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Johnson

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto which shattered Muslim sea power and led to the steady decline of Ottoman Turkey which had taken the banner of Islam from the Arabs and extended Islam into Europe after defeating the Byzantine Empire and taking Constantinople.

The MEN of the West, with the aid of Heaven, threw back the tide of Islam and ultimately reduced it to the impoverished, brain dead religion that it is, by denying their zombie feeding urges to continue feeding on Western Civilization/Christendom.

In honor of the day here are three good articles:

It's cultists vs. feminists... as River said earlier, I've got no dog in this fight.
At least we don't have a president right now who is both, as we almost did.

Eric, prayed when I saw your request earlier.
God be with your grandmother and glorified through the outcome.

Oak and JDC, much thanks for your prayers.

Paul and JDC, you are right. I believe the split was due to fellowship issues, not female pastors.

Actual feminists will never go after Islam; Islam will kill them and feminists are actual bullies, ergo, actual cowards.

The only women I've seen take Islam to task are Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Oriana Fallici. Now I'm not going to vouch for them not being feminists, but it's certainly true that neither was searching for social concessions, either. If I recall properly, both were more concerned with exposing the evil in Islam, whether it be their treatment of women (which we as Christians reject as well), their treatment of children, their insane 'science', their thuggery, and so on.

They both struck me as Randian in philosophy... not Marxian mouthbreathers.

For some of these things at this time, it will require a woman of specific courage to publicly confront people.

The funny part about this protest is that all the talks that are given in the priesthood session are available to listen to online and are published in the monthly magazine the following month. There is nothing that is spoken in the Preisthood session that is not available to the general public a short time after.
