The female buzz cut

As Heartiste and others have observed, women getting buzz cuts is a reliable indicator of severe emotional stress. I'm sure this:
Her blonde tresses have become her trademark over the years.  But Kate Hudson revealed she has bid her long locks goodbye on Tuesday as the actress was pictured with a bold new buzz cut while on the set of her new movie, Sister. The 38-year-old star proved her beauty knows no boundaries as she defiantly sat in hair and make up with her striking new hairdo.
Is totally unrelated to this:

When a woman is replaced by a younger, prettier woman, it is a savage blow to her psyche. In past times, shaving a woman's head was a sign of grief. It still is, it simply isn't usually recognized as such.

Agreed. Very turbulent years in my life led me to chop it all off, pixie style. It was the style young women were encouraged to emulate, a la Linda Evangelista.

Its almost st two feet long now, much improved. Whenever I see women with shaved heads or just very short, severe hair, I get a little sad. I try to be generous and think, maybe cancer and chemo so they're regrowing it, but usually it's not that.

The women I know with severely short hair are also very confrontational. They put up a badass babe demeanor and they're not very approachable. They're mostly very fit, into MMA and other fighting sports, don't bother with makeup and brag about the fact that they don't wear dresses.

It makes me even more determined to dress well and be sweet on the daily. Contrast.

She looks awful. This is equivalent to getting straight white men to play trannies or gays in films. Get women to reduce their value to be "groundbreaking " and edgy.

Karen Gillian shaved all of her gorgeous natural ginger hair off for a supporting role in Guardians of the Galaxy. They could have easily cgi'd her bald head, like they did with most of film. Sad.

Vox, while I appreciate the point you are trying to make, you have fallen for the usual Hollywood PR trick.

No actor would suddenly decide to cut their hair while making a movie. The hair decision is based entirely on the needs of the movie script, cutting her hair out of emotional angst in the middle of a movie would be like deciding to sit down and have a cooling umbrella drink in the middle of a soccer game. It just isn't done.

Nice picture; bad analogy.

Defiance is a good word to describe what she did. I'm sure her new look is striking in how much less attractive she looks. It's been a long time since Almost Famous. Hasn't she hit the wall quite hard?

Wow Matt Bellamy traded up hard.
Now let's hope Muse returns to their former glory.

Holy hell. That woman is stunning.

You have to be incredibly beautiful to look that good in an outfit that ugly.

I don't know who Birdlegs McHairgel is, but he's got to have some serious mojo to pull that.

Possibly. On the other hand, the make-up people are fully capable of requisitioning an appropriate wig.

That is an ugly-ass jumpsuit.

Ugly indeed. She's looked so much better but the demands of a models job mean you wear what we tell you. It's no wonder you see so many paparazzi shots of models in sweats and no makeup. It's likely the only thing they get to wear that's comfortable and their own.

Hudson could have easily refused to shave her head. If they wanted her badly enough they'd work around it. She went bald because she's not right in the head.

The key is in the description of her sitting "defiantly " in the makeup chair. She's got to stiff upper lip it now. You can't take back a bad haircut, and she has to double down with defiance to overcome her dread over making such a yuge mistake. She'll try to own it, but there isn't a way to do that.

Portman could, when she went bald for her role in V. Gillan grew her hair back and negotiated a return to the Nebula role IF she didn't have to shave her head again.

It's just stupid at this point. Cutting of your hair to spite the wall...

Most women who get buzz cuts are just making their bodies match the ugliness of their minds and souls.

Midnight Avenue J said...

Libberanter, there's a superficially practical reason a lot of women cut their hair: they think "ease of maintenance."

Short hair is anything but easy to maintain. Oh, it looks so cute on those gamin little things in magazines and you can too! But it's a pain in the ass.

Long hair is much easier. It needs to be washed less often. Styling is simple.

I'm agreeing with you in general. Short hair is giving up, thinking you've cut one more task out of a not-too busy life anyway, even though you've just added more trouble and time to your life than you bargained for. Plus, invisible.

For 8 years I dated a man who preferred short, spiky, bleached blonde hair on women. I thought most men liked long hair. Whatever attracts you, I guess, but I thought it a bit odd. The longer I let my hair grow, the less interested he was.

Just saw some video of her going up those stairs wearing that outfit. She has a spectacular pooper.

Reminds me of pubic hair. Women should have pubs. A little mohawk, a triangle, a landing strip, or a hitler. However a full blown medussa bush doesn't make my meat hard as stone, generally speaking.

"Bold new"
"beauty knows no boundaries"
"defiantly"
"striking new"

Even given the usual hyperbole the celebrities sheets use, this sounds like a pretty desperate attempt to turn a disaster into a victory. It doesn't seem likely that a buzzcut would be a necessary move for a female starring in a musical, either.

Am I the only who sees a resemblance to Rachel Madcow in those sideview pictures of buzzed Kate?

Long hair and a thick, hairy muffin... nothing better.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there, honey. Congrats! 😊

Actresses with clout will either refuse the role or demand changes. It wouldn't be happening if she didn't want it to.

It's hilarious that for about oh, ho-hum, 100 years a woman's act of bravery and defiance is cutting her hair. How brave, audacious, and daring.

Can I just say, anyone who refers to a girl's derriere with a word associated with defecation should be drawn and quartered...a slow-moving wood chipper, feet first, is an acceptable substitute.

30+ years ago a (low-life) coworker stained my mind by exclaiming, "Wow! Look at the sh---er on her!" I can't think of that period in my life without hearing his beneath-scum statement.

As to the OP, I'm reminded of CH's take on the four years of selfies posted by a college coed, by year: "Would Marry," "Would Date," Would Bang," "Would Mistake For A Boy."

Kate Hudson clearly moved into the final catagory (with similar BatGuano-Crazy.) It didn't help her that she was always a small-breasted woman. The paparrazzi will have to now INSIST on being tipped off; otherwise, they'll walk right by her without a second glance. The woman just tipped entirely into invisibility.

" it is a savage blow to her psyche"

The weird thing is not only that a lot of women deny they wear makeup to look good to guys, but that if you think about it beauty itself is mostly not under an individual woman's control. You can exercise and eat right sure, but you can't change your nose or cheekbones. So why is it such a savage blow to lose something you never earned in the first place?

JonM said...

Earned or not, if it's the thing you've built your entire sense of self worth around, it hurts to lose it.

Which is why the smart ones use their beauty as a path to something for more eternal and worthy - motherhood - rather than treat it as an end in itself.

The funny thing is, I thought of Katie Holmes and forgot who Kate Hudson was. But yeah, Kate Hudson, while considerably hotter than Holmes, is still both older and a single mom.

@Kentucky Headhunter
Hey now... looks like a decent-enough substrate for G.I. Jane costume. Needs camo coloring and armaments though.

"The weird thing is not only that a lot of women deny they wear makeup to look good to guys"

@Nate73
There's a common belief that women dress for other women. And naturally, "dress" includes hair styles. We all should know by now that's obviously bunk.
