I heard this song the other day and thought that it was nicely reflective of the Delta perspective. There is no bitterness or anger, just noble resignation, pedestalization and patience. Even the music is reflective of the Delta's stodgy persistence in waiting for the woman he idolizes. That's one of the main things that distinguishes the Delta from the Beta, Alpha and Sigma. He waits for women.
One too many times I fell over you
Once in a shadow I finally grew
And once in a night I dreamed you were there
I cancelled my flight from going nowhere
It's all I can do
To keep waiting for you
It's all I can do
It's all I can do
One too many times I twisted the gate
When I was crazy I thought you were great
I kept my renditions of you on the wall
Where holiday romance is nothing at all
It's all I can do
To keep waiting for you
It's all I can do
It's all I can do
You wait in the wing like a Saturday flirt
Protecting the judge, you don't want to get hurt
Once in a moment it all comes to you
As soon as you get it you want something new
It's all I can do
To keep waiting for you
It's all I can do
It's all I can do

That's pretty creepy, when you get right down to it.
The other day Steve Jones (ex- Sex Pistols guitarist) played a song on his radio show, "Man of the World" by Fleetwood Mac from 1969. Written by Peter Green. I hadn't heard it in ages. Good music, but the lyrics make me cringe.
The song Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell is a great example of delta music. It's about a hard working guy doing a job that's not glorious but is necessary for civilization.
Great song..
Never paid attention to the lyrics till now.
The weird thing is it was written by Ric Ocasek. He dated and married supermodel Paulina Porizkova while she was still in her prime and they are married to this day. How beautiful is she? Chateau Heartiste calls her the perfect 10 and a woman as close to physical perfection as a woman can get. Not only is he 15 years older than her, he won her with that face.
A guy like him can afford a little maudlin...*after* he has closed the deal and maintained hand.
This song always nauseated me:
Foreigner
"Waiting For A Girl Like You"
So long
I've been looking too hard, I've waiting too long
Sometimes I don't know what I will find
I only know it's a matter of time
When you love someone
When you love someone
It feels so right, so warm and true
I need to know if you feel it too
Maybe I'm wrong
Won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong
This heart of mine has been hurt before
This time I want be be sure
I've been waiting for a girl like you
To come into my life
I've been waiting for a girl like you
A love that will survive
I've been waiting for someone new
To make me feel alive
Yeah, waiting for a girl like you
To come into my life
You're so good
When we make love it's understood
It's more than a touch or a word we say
Only in dreams could it be this way
When you love someone
Yeah, really love someone
Now, I know it's right
From the moment I wake up till deep in the night
There's no where on earth that I'd rather be
Than holding you, tenderly
I've been waiting for a girl like you
To come into my life
I've been waiting for a girl like you
A love that will survive
I've been waiting for someone new
To make me feel alive
Yeah, waiting for a girl like you
To come into my life

I remember this song as well as the album, "Candy-O". I heard it over, and over while at a sleep-away camp during the summer of...... oh, it was so long ago.
IMO it's fairly common for rock stars to be alphas but to write lyrics like chumps.

@AM Apprentice
Ocasek is a Czech-American, i.e., the same ethnicity as Paulina. It might have made them a better match.
That said, Crowhill has a point. They write lyrics that sell, that Deltas can relate to and that women will fantasize their Alphas thinking on the inside.
Best Friend's Girlfriend has similar type vibe. When the Cars were releasing these I enjoyed the music but never enough to buy any albums. Maybe it was the lyrics bugging me at a sub-conscious level.
I used to listen religiously to classic rock, indie, doo-wop, and soul. However, i cannot abide popular music anymore. As my marriage failed and I struggled to shed my gamma ways (even before I knew of gammas), I found songs like "If Only You Were Lonely" unlistenable - they reminded me of a man I wished dead and buried. This Cars song sucks. Haydn (both Joseph and Michael), Antonio Rosetti, Beethoven, Schubert, and Dvorak are better bets, especially if one is middle aged and has more decades behind him than in front.
This is a beautiful song. It has a quality common in the '80s but basically extinct since the '90s: romance, yearning, woman as an ideal greater than the physical or even personal.
Are Deltas often romantics and poetic idealists? Do they love heroic fantasy and historical figures?
What about "Let's Go!" from that same album? Great album, btw, as I recall. Played the heck out it back in the day. "Let's Go!" seems highly delta, too. Or is it beta who has been locked away in friend status but hasn't realized it yet?
Let's Go
The Cars
She's driving away with the dim lights on
And she's making a play, she can't go wrong
She never waits too long
She's winding them down on her clock machine
And she won't give up 'cause she's seventeen
She's a frozen fire, she's my one desire
I don't want to hold her down
Don't want to break her crown
When she says "let's go
I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "let's go"
She's laughing inside 'cause they can't refuse
She's so beautiful now, she doesn't wear her shoes
She never likes to choose
She's got wonderful eyes and a risqué mouth
And when I asked her before she said she's holding out
She's a frozen fire, she's my one desire
I don't want to hold her down
Don't want to break her crown
When she says, "let's go"
I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "let's go"
"I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "I like the nightlife baby"
She says, "let's go"
That song has a great guitar solo.
