Feminists vs Communists

It should be interesting to see how feminism fares when faced with a considerably more self-confident ideology than traditional Western civilization:
China has upset its young female population by labelling those who fail to marry by the time they are 30 as ‘left over woman’.  The Communist government ordered its feminist All-China Women’s Federation to use the derogatory term in several stinging articles about the growing number of educated, professional, urban and single females aged 27-30 who have ‘failed’ to find a husband and are now  deemed ‘undesirable’.

‘Pretty girls do not need a lot of education to marry into a rich and powerful family. But girls with an average or ugly appearance will find it difficult,’ reads one article titled ‘Leftover Women Do Not Deserve Our Sympathy’.

The derogatory name has been picked up by the state media and stuck, causing an outcry among millions of ambitious young and educated females who claim they have been thrown on the scrap heap - and who bemoan the low quality of suitors.

The conservative country is going under rapid changes with more women shunning tradition to wed and raise a family early.  But the government wants to shame them into marrying young to counter the growing and serious gender imbalance among the of 1.3 billion population.
My money is on the Communists.  The feminist shriek-and-shame tactic is unlikely to work on a leadership that is cold-hearted enough to send the bill for the executioner's bullet to the surviving family.  I tend to suspect that if the Chinese birth rate falls low enough, the leftover women will find themselves receiving letters informing them that if they don't marry of their own accord within three months, they will be marrying Wei Lottery Winner whether they want to or not.

If Pat Roberson can make an exception for China, I'm sure the feminists will be able to also. Just part of the ongoing Baptists and Bootleggers game.

the US version of communism is far more totalitarian than the chinese model

here, it is demanded that males do not become males, and are forbidden to act like males, in favor of everyone being (and reverencing) the Almighty Female

at least the red-commies allow males to be boys and men, to some limited degree

a big step up from western nations

obviously, the chinese have been reading and LEARNING FROM m.r.m. sites, many of which target this very issue, of Career Cupcakes trying to force marriage in their thirties

"But girls with an average or ugly appearance will find it difficult"

when was the last time in ANY western nation that you heard the government, media or universities speak ONE word of truth to women? yet the chinese not only arent afraid to speak the truth, they'll toss it into womens' faces if it means improving their nation's welfare and survival

gee no wonder your money is on china. . . a nation making policy based on reality vs nations making policy based on the selfish, absurd demands of females, and of billionaire bitchboys

The Japanese had a similar concept, where they called women who were still unmarried by 25 years of age 'Christmas cake women.' Nobody wants Christmas cake after the 25th, so you get the idea. This was a term used in the 1980s to shame women into marrying at a young age. But given Japan's continued decline in reproduction, it shows that even the use of shame in a society that places great significance on the concept of shame wasn't sufficient to alter female behavior.

There is one tactic that's proven effective in shaping people's behavior, and that's discrimination. If the Chinese figure out some way to systematically discriminate against unmarried women, then China will likely produce far fewer unmarried women. If they don't, and just rely on shame, my money is on the feminists eventually winning.

The only way to have women go out of control or bring women back in line...is when society dictates it. That's how a herd breed works.

I thought China's One Child Policy had created a dearth of women.....what am I missing here? It seems as though women would have their pick of potential husbands. Is it that the women still choose not to marry - even with a large group of men to choose from?

This is absolutely correct...and if you look at the students from red China who are coming to the US to go to grad school, you'll see they are mostly female, mostly quite attractive.

These girls know full well that they can "play" in the States in their 20s and upon their return to China around age 30 they're going to be able to find any number of men ready to marry them, given that the Chinese birth rate is about 120 males:100 females (I think) due to the selective abortions that are going on.

Whatever you say,leftover woman.

It doesn't matter what the cause of the marriage strike is to me,I'm just delighted that all these retarded women won't be having "their big day",won't be reproducing, and will be dying alone cursing their own solipsism, and that they will then be eaten by their pets, because nobody will care enough to check to see if they're still breathing or not.

Here in my country it's possible to get married at 16 and, given all the promiscuity, for marriage purposes, personally, I always considered women over 18 to be ‘left over woman’ hahaha.

The fact that when women have more choices, they become at least that much more choosy.

When a woman's choice of suitors consisted of a few dozen guys in her small town, and there were an equal number of eligible girls vying for them, she quickly picked one and settled down. Let her feel like she can choose from thousands, even millions of men, and she feels like if she settles down too soon, she'll miss the best one out there somewhere.

Singapore had and has a similar lament, and the ministrynsaid specifically college education was the problem.

I don't see the push for marriage in china, other than having too many men. Pro-marriage but anti-motherhood cannot work. But communists have tried more stupid things.

And? Feminism is the female counterpart, and part of the program to develop, communism. Just as a solid husband will tell his wife, on some things, to just shut up and do it, and she will if she is committed... communism (and really socialism in general) does the same thing, as a group, to women. The notion that socialism, in any form, is there to free women is one of the funniest jokes I had ever heard.

Take it for the team, honey.

What surprises me is that these government forms in, say, Russia, haven't simply forced women into marriages and forced them to start having children (yet). It's trying to coerce them, at this time... but that is bound to fail. When the government has the power of life or death, do you think they are going to care about some woman's freedom or allow a
'stupid cow' to control "her body"? Really?

Japan is an aberration. They stridently indoctrinated their people to believe that WWII was apocalyptic; all the manly men and average men died trying to save their country. They were left with the lowest, disease ridden failures to repopulate. Hybrid vigor from American GI loins is the only plus.

In addition to Christmas Cake (discounted to sell from the 26th onward), the Japanese also use the term 'Omisoka' (New Year's Eve) to describe a 31-year old single woman.

Unfortunately, these shaming terms, while more poetic than the Chinese 'leftover women', have proven less than effective in a nation that avidly incorporates western concepts, including increasing feminism.

This is actually a known psychological effect. Sales staff and others are often trained to offer limited choices (i.e., A or B) to get the customer to decide more easily. Studies have shown that closing rates fall when offered three or more choices at once.

Well, that's not counting the abortions, and that's part of the problem for the Commies - can't mandate marriage and still permit abortion.

Chinese cities are like an American university campus or New York City. Despite the sex imbalance in China, the cities have more women than men. The women are more likely to move to do factory work and they move to the big cities, Beijing, Shanghai. The men stay behind and work the farmland.

China had more extensive feminism than America. The communists forced women to work, and have slogans such as "Women hold up half the sky." The fertility rate in cities such as Shanghai is probably equal to or even less than that in the West, and more closely aligns with Singapore or HK, which have no limits on reproduction.

Education is very much the key here, probably a bigger factor than any sort of feminism in China. Girls going for master's or PhDs there openly joke about that they are completely unmarriageable and all the guys are very clear that they prefer a girl who is one step below them on the educational ladder. But hey, that works for me because that makes foreigners that much more attractive to the good looking chinese girls.

I find it strange to read in other comments that China would be some sort of bastion of feminism*. True, there has been many slogans, and sure, women were forced to work the farms as men during the cultural revolution. But, in all the Chinese families I know the mothers and their daughters do the housework and cooking while I drink baijiu with the men.

*My metric in this subject could be very different from other commenters since I am from a quite feminist country in Scandinavia.

No. China is a communist country. 'If you are not married in three months you will be impregnated by your local Red Guard unit. Report for gang rape as required'. See Engels on the family, Beria on teenage girls, Aryan womanhood under Nazi party members

I think there is STILL a serious underestimation of what the Chinese leadership is willing to try. However, I am certain they will fail as they try to retain power. They will certainly stain the world with blood trying however.

But the gender population imbalances ALWAYS end up balancing in the end. Always. Civilization is built upon the family unit. It was created that way. Genetically we are programmed for a roughly 50/50 gender mix.

Vox,

A serious question about this. Given the current "gender imbalance" in China of x number of million surplus males...

how is it that *any* of these women are single?

And in response to Papabear about Hagen-Dazs...

hmmm, given the satirical song "Cat in the Kettle" is the increasing number of older spinsters going to result in sporadic food shortages as the womynz start adopting all the stray cats?

Feminists are always in the forefront of any progressive movement, attacking family, promoting equality of the sexes, etc. The shock troops, as it were, to undermining the society which the progressives wish to destroy by enhancing the power of the state.

Unfortunately for the women, as soon as the transfer of power is complete they generally are given two choices, neither of which includes real power.

1. Lip service to equality which means they are given no quarter and expected to slave for the state just as the men are. The state is your family..family bonds are not promoted.

2. Get back to the kitchen, have lots of kids, keep everyone happy. Promote the state.

The first is generally what one sees in a traditional Leftist state.

The second is generally what is seen in a leftist state which people sometimes confuse as being from the right, ie. fascism.
